More old pics, Balik Pulau 2004

The area is amongst some prawn breeding facilities in Balik Pulau...not sure if it was an ex-paypond or not, but it was a nice place. My old classmate's dad, Dr. Hia invited me to join him there.

The pond at Balik Pulau

Lots of tarpons streaking about as evening came by. I was spinning and Dr. Hia broke out his fly-fishing equipment.

Tarpon on Yozuri Minnow

Fly-fishing truly is interesting. The line whipping about, dancing and teasing the surface of the pond... I made a note to give it a try back then...

Dr. Hia and his tarpon, on fly

Even to this day however, lack of access to the gear and a teacher has made me put this off till a future date...

I will get about to doing it!!!...*soon*

Pulau Kendi, 11th Feb

Pay attention to your lunar dates!
A lesson learned...

Its been a LONG while since we were out on a boat and i guess we were too eager.
Charlie and myself decided to make a trip out to Pulau Kendi since it was a long weekend for Thaipussam. Only refered to my tidal notes for the tide shifts.

Figured that we could still try our luck with the whopper Stingrays in that area with live squids.

We were desperate to go out...no one noted that it was Chap Goh Meh!...the moon was so bright it felt like a spotlight was bearing down on us...
in other words, no sotong! :(

...all we had were the pathetic shrimp i managed to jala the night before...not very good sizes...

Towards the end of the night, we managed to pull up some decent sized croakers, about 20 or so, but that was the extent of it...

Casting in the morning also proved fruitless for biggies...not even the Queenies came out to play with our poppers...

Still, cant say i had a bad time
...better a bad day at sea than a good day in the cube

Heh.

Unexpected little surprise :)

Was stuck on the fisherman's dock waiting for a boat out to the pillar yesterday...decided to do some casting since there seemed to be lots of fish fries hanging around being chased...

Tried a popper and some softbaits at first, no takers. The Storm however, was snapped up quickly by this little cuda, or Kacang Kacang, which is what the fishermen here called it :)

The pillar itself wasnt particularly fruitful...

These little cudas were quite fun on light setup...would like to try casting forthem again soon...

Selama, Perak...Udang Galah and Haruan hunt

Was invited by Charlie to drop by his in-laws place...been a good year or so since my last haruan hunting there.

This trip of course, was a little different...target: Udang Galah! Never tried it before, but am hooked now...

Arrived evening on Saturday, Charlie had the petrol for his boat ready and supplies set up...off we went to Din's place, Din, being the nice fellow who houses the boat at his house, next to one of the river's feeder streams.

Beginners luck was probably to blame for my early catch, landed a few moments after our first stop...a decent sized specimen too...
Alas, that was to be our only catch for the rest of that day. The water wasnt particularly good for prawning, but my host was determined to show me a good time...

I tried insisting that I was already quite satisfied with my first ever Udang Galah and the serenity of the river itself...he wouldnt hear it tho...heh.

7:00AM following day: Breakfast and stocking up on foods for lunch. Todays catch wasnt particularly good, but damn! the river in the early AM sure is a beautiful sight. Comin back at 3PM, only a short half-hour break before we were out again...this time for the elusive Haruan!...It was kind of a last minute decision to go for the snake-heads by the bro-in-law, but pooped as we were, we werent gonna say no!
Nothing spectacular on the Haruan hunt, with me losing 2 hook-ups and landing a 6-incher...i had to let it go...lest it was eaten by the bait :P ...the others had some better luck...

Catch total: 3 prawns, 5 haruans...Charlies momma-in-law cooked up a nice little gulai with the prawns and fried the snake-heads...uber yummy stuff!!!Will be back for sure!
